In a darker part of Tamil's history, there was a group called the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. They fought violently for their to be a seperate state for the Tamil, north of Sri Lanka. They attacked Sri Lankan and Indian politicians, and killed many civilians. They where also suicide bombers, and where classified as terrorists in 32 countires. I would say that this is a total institution, as once you joined the LTTE, you could not get out. You where stuck staying with them, going to the same place, and being told what to. If you rebelled against the LTTE, you where viewed as a 'traitor', and would be killed. This fits the definition of a total institution, as all of the people in the LTTE had very similar views, and where for the most part segregated from society.
In 2009, the leader of the group, Velupillia Prabhakaran was killed, and the group was brought to an end. Another man, named Selvarasa Pathmanathan tried to become leader, but was arrested in Malaysia and then handed over to the Sri Lankan government.
