The Tamil community has done well when it comes to conformity. They have been able to keep their culture, while still opening up to the western world. It helps that, unlike many other historical cultures, the Tamil spread out all over the world, and they still keep many of their culture's old traditions. Things like their rights of passage, religion and different ceremonies mean a lot to them, and they try to stay true to them. It helps that the surrounding areas of Tamil Nadu do not push for the complete integration of the Tamil people with the rest of their customs, unlike what happened with many other groups in the past.
That being said, the Tamil people still have had to deal with the discrimination against their culture. From 1801 to 1947, Tamil Nadu was under European rule, and many of the Tamil's customs where taught out of them. After 1947, Tamil Nadu became independent, and they made sure to renew and follow their customs. Even then, they still had to deal with issues, especially with the Tamil Tigers, who believed that the Tamil were still being oppressed. Despite this dark history, the Tamil have made sure to secure their culture, and that shows how strong their people are.
